ABOUT US

Hello,

We are Lynn and Jon Churchill. We live on the outskirts of the pretty little village of Churchinford in the parish of Otterford in The Blackdown Hills. Frys Moor is where four parishes meet and straddles the border of Devon and Somerset. If your idea of a romantic break away is being wrapped in luxury but being surrounded by nature, Old Rose shepherd hut and hot tub or The French Room B&B is the one for you.

Amongst the leafy woodland and trickling streams. Wild birds, butterflies, buzzing bees, beavers, otters and dormice live beside us and the patient guest will spot them. Rambling and cycling the quiet lanes in the surrounding area. A peaceful stroll up to the village pub where the food is good and the locals don’t bite! A leisurely drive to The Jurassic coast and Lyme Bay for lunch, perhaps.

Fry’s Moor House and land has been ours since 2015. We used to live half a mile up the lane and would walk past Fry’s Moor every day. Both of us were captivated by its magical setting, bordered by streams and overlooking the river Otter. How about wild swimming and picnics down at the ford?

When Fry’s Moor became available, it had our name on it. On ancient maps Fry’s Moor was known as Friar’s Moor with the tiny monastery still here, although now in private hands.

Fry’s Moor cottage is said to have been owned by the church and was the parish ‘poor house’.  When we bought the little stone cottage we wanted to preserve it and although we have extended and updated it, the original cottage is still standing.

It comes with a rich history which was enthusiastically told to us by the previous occupier, although no one has lived here for 55 years. This charming gentleman now in his late eighties was born in the cottage and the tales he had to tell.

Living in this unique, protected area of outstanding natural beauty, we are excited to be able to share it with you. Our shepherd hut ‘Old Rose’ was skilfully hand- crafted in oak by Joshua Rose of Axminster. Joshua is Hawaiian. He and his family own and run a wood mill in Hawaii, so Joshua knows his wood. This beautiful shepherd’s hut is high end glamping with attention paid to every detail. Lots of French vintage and shabby chic with each item being individually sourced.

Tucked away on the edge of the wild meadow, you have your own private decking area with table, chairs and BBQ all in a magical setting with beautiful views over the rolling hills.  There is on site parking with a 120m walk along Bluebell Walk, a winding woodland path .

Finally, chilling out in the Scandinavian jacuzzi hot tub, sipping iced champagne and gazing at the stars. Don’t be surprised if you have visitors. The deer are very curious!!!

New this summer The French Room B&B.
